Researchers at MIT CSAIL and Tianjin University created X-Hinges, a software tool that allows users to design and 3D-print interactive objects with embedded multi-material sensing across up to three axes of motion. By cleanly integrating separate filaments for sensors and conductive traces during fabrication, the system turns stationary objects—such as lamps, tools, and decor—into responsive devices that register human touch and movement. For design and architecture faculty, this demonstrates how computational additive manufacturing can embed kinetic interactivity and physical intelligence directly into the material structure of everyday artifacts.
