A new flexible foot pad enables this one-legged, hopping robot to go where few robots have gone before

THE AI ANGLE
Planned implementation for future autonomous navigationEngineers built a flexible, spiked foot pad with a spherical joint for a one-legged hopping robot. The passive joint and wider pad reduce takeoff errors while preventing the machine from slipping on ice or sinking into sand. This mechanical adaptation gives designers an alternative to continuous flight or heavy wheeled chassis on difficult surfaces.
THE TEACHING ANGLE
Students can evaluate the design trade-offs in payload, cost, and energy use between pure quadcopters, wheeled platforms, and hybrid hopping robots.Read the original at techxplore.com Generate teaching or study materials
