Navigating automated vehicles that interact with pedestriansA Virginia Tech and Zoox study demonstrated that automated vehicles can use custom exterior audio tones to deter jaywalkers as effectively as standard car horns while being perceived more favorably by pedestrians. However, waiting tones intended to signal that a vehicle will yield at crosswalks showed mixed results, successfully encouraging crossing less than half the time. These findings provide essential empirical evidence for planning and engineering autonomous transit environments that safely communicate vehicle intent to all pedestrians, including those with visual impairments.
