THE AI ANGLE
Displaying responsive behaviors under identical conditions to humansResearchers tested how people attribute mental states to humans and artificial systems displaying identical behavior. Participants gave artificial systems high awareness ratings, but they rated even the most responsive system as less conscious than the least responsive human. Scholars in mind and cognition must now account for how specific vocabulary alters perceived mental states.
