From 7,000 drugs to one active against resistant strains: AI advances pneumonia drug repurposing

Screening drug libraries to identify candidates for antimicrobial repurposingResearchers deployed three distinct AI architectures—ensembles of decision trees, graph neural networks, and sequence-based transformers—to screen nearly 7,000 candidate drugs for inhibitory activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae. Experimental validation of 11 selected compounds revealed that nine successfully inhibited bacterial growth, with one potent compound remaining effective against drug-resistant strains. This demonstrates the viability of multi-model computational drug repurposing as a rapid, cost-effective strategy to address urgent antimicrobial resistance.
