Spelling backward gets easier for AI models upgraded to see every letter

THE AI ANGLE
Reading text byte by byteResearchers created a method to convert existing language models into byte-level models using less than one percent of standard training. The converted models keep their original capabilities and perform better on character tasks such as spelling backward. This gives researchers a practical way to run byte-level models on text, code, and biological sequences without retraining from scratch.
THE TEACHING ANGLE
Students can debate the trade-offs between the speed of subword tokenization and the character awareness of byte-level processing.Read the original at techxplore.com Generate teaching or study materials
