Steering wheel communicates for better semiautonomous driving performance

THE AI ANGLE
Planning vehicle maneuvers and negotiating turn paths with human driversResearchers built a steering wheel with expanding haptic zones that lets drivers negotiate turn directions with vehicle automation. In simulation tests, squeezing the wheel to counter automated choices lowered driver workload and improved steering accuracy. This gives mechanical and interface designers an alternative to flashing visual warnings and steering resistance.
THE TEACHING ANGLE
Two-way negotiation helped drivers regain confidence after system mistakes, but it also led some participants to trust the vehicle too much.Read the original at techxplore.com Generate teaching or study materials
