Unlocking AI as a research tool for plant microscopy

THE AI ANGLE
Struggling to identify microscopic plant cells and pathogensUniversity of Queensland researchers created a dataset named PlantMicro to test how vision-language models interpret plant microscopy. Current models averaged roughly 30 percent accuracy when identifying plant hosts and pathogens. The dataset exposes specific image interpretation errors that researchers must address before automated systems can support botanical studies.
THE TEACHING ANGLE
Students can examine why advanced vision models achieve near-chance accuracy on microscopic plant structures despite finding wider adoption in other microscopy disciplines.Read the original at phys.org Generate teaching or study materials
