THE AI ANGLE
Generating deepfakes and altering visuals in political adsResearchers tracked eighty million dollars spent on AI political ads in the 2026 midterms, mostly sponsored by Republicans. Less than a third of these ads disclosed the technology, and state laws did not increase disclaimer rates. This leaves researchers and reporters relying on manual detection to identify synthetic media across fragmented state policies.
